Fatal car accidents in Chippewa County increase 120% in 2013

Chippewa County, Wisconsin motorists saw an increase of 120% in fatal vehicle accidents in 2013, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Accident Records Unit. There were 11 crashes, up from 2012’s five fatal crashes.

Fatal crashes in Dunn County also more than doubled in 2013 from 2012, from six in 2012 to 13 fatalities in 2013. Motorcycle driver fatalities also experienced a significant drop in statistics to 80 cases in 2013 from 102 in 2012. Meanwhile, motorcycle passenger deaths declined to 4 from 14, pedestrian deaths went down to 37 from 44, and bicyclist deaths decreased to 10 from 11.

Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb said most of Wisconsin’s serious crashes are brought about by “bad driving habits and irresponsible decisions.”
