Plea Deal Reached in Fatal Wisconsin Motorcycle Crash

A plea agreement was reached Wednesday in the case of man facing four felony charges related to a fatal Wisconsin motorcycle accident in September 2009.

According to Rusk County Circuit Court documents, 43 year-old Ronald J. Rasmussen pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, a Class G felony, Wednesday. Rasmussen faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, and a fine of $25,000.

The charges against Rassmussen stem from a September 20, 2009 motorcycle accident on U.S. 8 in the Town of Thornapple. The accident caused the death of 35 year-old Corey D. Berkman, of St. Cloud, Minnesota. Berkman and two other motorcyclists were on the gravel shoulder of the road trying to fix Berkman’s motorcycle when the accident occurred, according to the criminal complaint. Rassmussen was traveling west in a pickup truck when he moved on to the shoulder and struck all three motorcyclists.
