Motorcycle fatalities down from 2008

Motorcycle accident fatalities in the U.S. dropped in the first nine months of 2009 after 10 years of steady increases, new studies show. The previous year held more than 5,200 fatalities, the highest ever. Numbers for 2009 indicate a 16 percent drop.

A spokesman for the Motorcycle Riders Association said motorcycle use is not lagging, because people want better gas mileage. The study, sponsored by the Governors Highway Safety Association, does not indicate a reason for this drop, but study facilitators said it was probably caused by the economy and people cutting back on recreational riding.
