Man charged with alcohol-related offenses after fatal drunk driving accident

Twenty-two-year-old Baraboo, Iowa resident Kevin Vaness was charged on Wednesday, September 4 with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle due to causing a crash along Gall and Old Lake roads on Sunday, September 1  at around 9 p.m. The accident caused the death and injuries of his friends, 27-year-old Benjamin Brooks and 23-year-old Tory Frenzel, who were riding a motorcycle.

Brooks succumbed to death after incurring several lacerations, as well as spine, pelvis, and head injuries. A University of Wisconsin Hospital spokeswoman said Frenzel was listed under critical condition after suffering lung, internal organ, and head injuries.

If Vaness posts the $50,000 bail set by Sauk County Circuit Court Judge Patrick Taggart, Vaness would not be allowed to enter liquor stores or bars, must maintain absolute sobriety, and may not contact the family of the victims.

Vaness has previously been convicted for two drunken driving charges in August 2011.
