Viroqua Woman Pleads No Contest in Fatal Wisconsin Motorcycle Accident

A Viroqua woman has pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in a Wisconsin motorcycle accident last year.

According to Wisconsin Circuit Court documents, 22 year-old Rebecca Kulas pleaded no contest March 24 in Crawford County Circuit Court in Prarie du Chien to charges of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle as part of a plea agreement. Kulas also pleaded guilty to two felony counts of reckless driving causing great bodily harm. As part of the plea agreement, two charges of felony bail-jumping were dismissed.

According to police records, 46 year-old Soldiers Grove-resident Jeffrey Skarda was killed July 8 as he drove his motorcycle southbound on Highway 61 near Day Creek Road. Police say Kulas was traveling northbound on the highway and attempted to pass two vehicles on a double yellow line when she collided head-on with Skarda’s motorcycle.

Kulas faces 17 years in prison and $45,000 in fines.
