The Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study

Begun in 1999, the Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study, or MAIDS, was run as a modernized version of the notable Hurt Report, which was published in 1981 and reported on motorcycle accident factors. The study ran for three years across much of Western Europe, collecting 921 accident reports and 923 exposure cases to piece together a general view of motorcycle safety. The data included reports for motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters.

Findings from the MAIDS Report

Although this study does not perfectly reflect the same problems found across the United States, it does reinforce some of the widely-held beliefs about motorcycle safety. Although US riders typically have to share the road with more motorists than do European riders, much of the information on rural and urban riding is still relevant for US motorcyclists. Consider some of the following patterns found in the data:

  • 72 percent of accidents occurred in an urban environment
  • About 54 percent of accidents occurred at an intersection
  • 60 of collisions involved a passenger car

When drivers in cities and suburbs fail to pay attention to motorcyclists and observe their rights on the road, riders can be injured in devastating accidents.
